Project 2008: Climate Change and Bangladesh

Awareness Campaign On Climate Change's Impact On Bangladesh
The international community recognises that an already
vulnerable country such as Bangladesh is at the fore
front of the adverse effects of climate change. A senior
Bangladeshi politician recently quoted “while
for some countries, the impacts might be lifestyle threatening,
for others it is life threatening”. It is clear
through many reports from international scientists that
climate change will exacerbate many of the natural hazards
that Bangladesh faces. Bangladesh, standing in the face
of, millions of potential climate refugees, is still
unfortunately not getting enough attention from the
international policy makers and the media.
We feel this ignorance and lack of urgency from the
developed world needs to change.
Drishtipat, a global organization of expatriate Bangaldeshis,
has undertaken an awareness raising campaign on the
impact of climate change on Bangladesh and needs your
help as partners.
The campaign is broken down in three phases.
Phase 1: Awareness in the UK among media and
policy making
The project will initially concentrate on an awareness
campaign in UK The awareness building will happen through
media campaigns and panel discussions/debates. The panellists
for the initial phase will consist of relevant stakeholders
from Bangladeshi and British government, International
development agencies, and Non governmental Organisations
(NGOs) and media representatives. The panel discussion
will be complimented with a photo exhibition illustrating
the social and environmental effects of climate change
on Bangladesh. In addition to that a team of BBC journalists
will be sharing their experience to the audience, of
a recent river tour in Bangladesh, where they saw for
themselves the true effects of climate change and in
the process they raised awareness of this topic to the
local people.
Phase 2: Awareness among the public internationally
The second phase of this project will consists of cultural
events and film screenings depicting the lives of people
who are affected by climate change. The aim is to sustain
pressure on the policy makers to keep their focus on
Bangladesh on this issue.
Phase 3: Campaign in Bangladesh
This campaign will be extended to Bangladesh in due
course to increase accountability and cooperation among
all governmental and non governmental organisations
working in this area. This project will ensure that
the people of Bangladesh and the international donors
are fully aware of the issues faced by Bangladesh’s
fight against climate change and are appropriately prepared.
